Netflix’s ‘Love Is Blind’ brings the reality dating show into 2020
Though there have been many memorable dating shows, like current hits The Bachelor and The Bachelorette , far more romance-minded series have been left to die alone, never finding love with audiences. Here are 17 of the latter. Without looking at them, Hull gradually eliminated three of the six contestants based on the answers to his questions. The more their answers matched, the more expensive their grand prize of a trip would be.
Averaging three million viewers a night , Studs was a brief phenomenon when it was syndicated on Fox affiliates. Two male contestants went on one-on-one dates with each of the three female contestants before taping.
‘Labor of Love’ breaks from the typical reality dating show — by taking a making it to Week 5, when Womack eliminated her, saying she was.
Dating game shows are television game shows that incorporate a dating system in the form of a game with clear rules. Human matchmaking is involved only in selecting the game’s contestants, who are usually selected more for the amusement value than any concern for their happiness or compatibility. The audience sees only the game; an important feature of all dating game shows is that the contestants have little or no previous knowledge of each other, and are exposed to each other only through the game, which may include viewing a photograph or at least knowing the basic criteria for participation typically participants are not already married.
There have been a number of dating shows aired on television over the years, using a variety of formats and rules. They are presented for the entertainment of the viewers. As the genre progressed, the format developed towards a reality-style show and more into a relationship show then simply finding a mate. The dating game show subgenre has its origins in the United States. The original dating game shows were introduced by television producer Chuck Barris.
The format of Barris’s first dating show, The Dating Game , which commenced in , put an unmarried man behind a screen to ask questions of three women who are potential mates, or one woman who asked questions of three men. The person behind the screen could hear their answers and voices but not see them during the gameplay, although the audience could see the contestants. The various suitors were able to describe their rivals in uncomplimentary ways, which made the show work well as a general devolution of dignity.
Questions were often obviously rigged to get ridiculous responses, or be obvious allusions to features of the participants’ private areas. The Newlywed Game , by contrast, another Barris show, had recently married couples competing to answer questions about each other’s preferences. The couple who knew each other the best would win the game; sometimes others got divorced.

The series takes four couples at a crucial time in their relationship, splits them up in two houses, and surrounds them with sexy single people to date over the course of the show. Either the couples will weather the storm or they’ll give into temptation, but there will inevitably be drama no matter what happens with that many men and women living in fancy villas together. Temptation Island is hardly the first insane-sounding show centered around dating on TV and not even the first version of Temptation Island , but it might just be the most cruel and therefore entertaining.
Join us as we take a walk through some of TV’s other wild TV dating concepts—minus The Bachelor, because in comparison, one person dating 30 other people and slowly eliminating them is practically a normal way to date at this point. Temptation Island might be the most twisted of them all, just because its stars are not even single. The show takes four established couples, splits them up into guys and girls, then puts the girls in a house full of single guys and the guys in a house full of single girls.
They all have to live with and date the singles and decide if they want to stay in their relationship or not. The first version of the show aired on Fox in , and now it’s been revamped for USA Network in , though it’s no less diabolical this time around. It’s like The Bachelor on some serious drugs. One mysterious, unseen man or woman “dates” a bunch of women or men over the course of one TV episode taping. It’s all pageant-style, complete with a swimwear category, and it unexpectedly and disturbingly has a 40 percent success rate.
In Fox’s short-lived reality show, a group of single people lived in a luxurious hotel resort in a competition to see who can stay in the hotel the longest. On certain episodes, someone is removed from the show with another being brought in to shake things up. Each week, couples pair off and must share a hotel room together.

Dubbing itself a “social experiment,” the show features an equal number of male and female contestants who are looking to fall in love with someone for who they truly are, not what they look like. The contestants go on dates in self-contained pods and they only get to see one another after getting engaged. Following an engagement, the couples are taken on a romantic trip to Mexico before getting married less than a month later.
